How Often to Replace Towels: A UK Guide
Knowing how often to replace towels saves you both money and frustration, because a towel that has genuinely worn out cannot be rescued by any amount of washing. The short answer is every two to five years for domestic use, but the signs matter more than the calendar.
The short answer
A well-made 600GSM cotton towel, washed correctly, should give three to five years of daily service. A cheap short-staple towel may be finished in twelve to eighteen months. Hotels replace far more often, sometimes every six to twelve months, but they are laundering at industrial temperatures several times a week.
Treat the timeframe as a guide rather than a rule. Two households can get completely different lifespans from identical towels depending on wash habits and drying conditions.
Signs your towels need replacing
These are the checks worth doing before you buy anything new.
- Absorbency has gone. The towel pushes water around instead of taking it up, and does not recover after a hot vinegar wash. This is the clearest signal.
- The pile is thin and patchy. Hold the towel to the light. If you can see through the middle where it gets most use, the loops have worn away.
- Persistent smell. A musty odour that survives a 60°C wash means bacteria are established in fibres that are no longer sound.
- Frayed or detached hems. Once the hem goes, the towel unravels quickly and there is no practical repair.
- Roughness that does not soften. If a stripping wash does not restore the feel, the cotton fibres themselves have been damaged, usually by over-drying.

What shortens towel life
Most towels die early, and almost always for the same handful of reasons.
Fabric softener
It leaves a waxy coating that builds up wash after wash. The towel feels briefly softer and gets steadily worse at absorbing, which is the one job it has.
Too much detergent
Dense terry pile does not rinse cleanly. Excess detergent stays in the loops, stiffens them and traps odour. Use about half what you would for clothing.
High tumble-dryer heat
Heat scorches cotton fibres and makes them brittle. This is the one form of damage that cannot be reversed. Low heat is genuinely better for towels than high.
Never drying fully
A towel that stays damp between uses degrades quickly and develops smells that eventually will not wash out. Owning enough towels to rotate properly extends the life of all of them.

Wash before first use to remove the manufacturing finish. Wash at 40°C day to day and 60°C periodically. Skip softener entirely. Use half the detergent. What to do with old towels
Worn towels rarely belong in general waste. Cotton is biodegradable and useful.
- Cut them down into cleaning cloths, which outlast any supermarket alternative.
- Animal shelters and veterinary practices frequently need old towels and bedding. Ring ahead and ask.
- Many UK textile recycling banks accept worn towels even when they are not fit for reuse.
- Keep one or two in the car boot and one in the garage. They earn their keep.

How often should you replace towels?

Why do my towels smell even after washing?
Usually detergent or softener build-up trapping bacteria, not the towel itself being finished. Run a hot wash with a cup of white vinegar and no detergent, then a second hot wash with bicarbonate of soda. If the smell survives both, replace the towel.
Do expensive towels last longer?
