How to Wash and Care for Cotton Bath Towels

Knowing how to wash cotton bath towels properly is the difference between a towel that stays soft for years and one that goes stiff within months. The rules are simple, and most people get two of them wrong.

Wash new towels before you use them

New towels arrive with a manufacturing finish that coats the fibres and repels water. This is why a brand new towel can feel lovely but push water around instead of soaking it up. One wash before first use removes it. Absorbency typically keeps improving over the first three to five washes as the pile fully opens.

How to wash cotton bath towels correctly

Temperature

40°C handles normal use. Use 60°C periodically, or for towels used during illness, to deal with bacteria and the bacteria that cause musty smells. Cotton at 600GSM tolerates 60°C without trouble.

Detergent

Use roughly half what you would for clothing. Excess detergent does not rinse out of dense terry pile. It builds up, stiffens the loops and blocks absorbency, which is the most common cause of towels that have gone hard.

Skip the fabric softener

This is the single most important rule. Softener works by depositing a waxy coating on fibres. On a towel that is precisely the wrong outcome, because it waterproofs the thing whose entire job is absorbing water. Towels feel briefly softer and perform steadily worse.

If you want softness, add half a cup of white vinegar to the rinse drawer instead. It strips residue without coating the fibres, and the smell does not survive the wash.

Load size

Do not overfill. Towels need room to move for detergent to reach the pile and rinse out again. Fill the drum to about three-quarters, and wash towels separately from clothing so lint does not transfer.

Drying properly

Tumble drying on low or medium is genuinely good for towels, because the tumbling action lifts and separates the loops. High heat is not: it scorches cotton fibres, makes them brittle and shortens the life of the towel considerably.

Adding wool dryer balls helps by keeping the load moving and cutting drying time. Take towels out while very slightly damp and hang them to finish, rather than baking them bone dry.

Air drying works well too, provided there is airflow. A towel drying slowly in a cold, closed bathroom is how musty smells start.

Reviving towels that have gone stiff or smelly

Two washes will usually reset a neglected towel. Run the first on hot with one cup of white vinegar and no detergent, to dissolve detergent and softener build-up. Run a second hot wash with half a cup of bicarbonate of soda and again no detergent, to neutralise odour. Then tumble dry on low.

Do not combine vinegar and bicarbonate in the same cycle, because they neutralise one another and you get the benefit of neither.

Everyday habits that extend towel life

• Hang towels spread out, not bunched on a hook, so they dry fully between uses.
• Wash bath towels after three or four uses, hand towels more often.
• Keep bleach away from coloured towels; it weakens cotton fibres as well as stripping colour.
• Do not iron towels, as it flattens the pile and reduces absorbency.
• Store only when completely dry, and never in a sealed container while damp.

How long should towels last?

A well-made 600GSM cotton towel, washed correctly, should give several years of daily service. Replace when the pile has gone thin and patchy, when absorbency does not recover after a vinegar strip wash, or when hems have frayed away.
