Why cotton type matters

All cotton is not equivalent. The critical variable is staple length, meaning the length of the individual fibre before it is spun into yarn. Longer fibres produce smoother, stronger yarn with fewer exposed ends, which is why long-staple cotton feels softer and sheds far less lint.

Short-staple cotton has many more fibre ends poking out of the yarn. Those ends are what make a cheap towel feel scratchy, and what break off as lint in the tumble dryer.

Egyptian cotton

Grown in the Nile basin, genuine Egyptian cotton is an extra-long staple fibre, typically 34mm or more. It produces the softest and most absorbent towelling available, with a dense, plush hand feel that improves over the first several washes.

Strengths: exceptional softness, very high absorbency, minimal linting, long lifespan.
Trade-offs: the most expensive option, and the heaviest and slowest to dry.

One caution: the term is widely misused. Much of what is sold as Egyptian cotton is a blend or is simply mislabelled. Look for certification or a trusted retailer rather than the phrase alone.

Turkish cotton

Grown in the Aegean region, Turkish cotton is long staple, slightly shorter than Egyptian. It is the traditional choice for hammam and spa textiles.

Strengths: soft but noticeably quicker drying, lighter to handle, good absorbency, softens progressively with use.
Trade-offs: not quite as plush as Egyptian at the same GSM.

For UK bathrooms, which are often small and not brilliantly ventilated, the faster drying is a genuine practical advantage.

Standard cotton

Most towels are made from upland cotton, a short to medium staple fibre that accounts for the large majority of world production.

Strengths: affordable, widely available, perfectly serviceable at good GSM.
Trade-offs: less soft, sheds more lint initially, and tends to wear out sooner.

• Zero-twist loops are untwisted, so more fibre surface contacts your skin. Extremely soft and absorbent, though less hard-wearing over many years.

Which should you choose?

If you want maximum luxury and have somewhere warm to dry towels, Egyptian is the plushest option. If you want a soft towel that dries reliably in a normal bathroom, Turkish is the sensible pick for most UK homes. If budget is the priority, a well-made combed standard cotton towel at 600GSM will serve you well and considerably outperform a cheap towel with a prestigious name on the label.
