What features do smartwatches have?
Most smartwatches show phone notifications, count steps and calories, monitor heart rate, track sleep and offer sport modes. Many add Bluetooth calling, music controls, blood-oxygen (SpO2) readings, weather and alarms. Higher-end models add built-in GPS, contactless payments, apps and LTE connectivity.
| Feature | What it does | Who it suits |

| Heart-rate monitoring | Optical sensor estimates heart rate continuously or on demand | Fitness tracking |
| SpO2 | Estimates blood-oxygen saturation | Wellness tracking (not a medical device) |
| Sleep tracking | Estimates sleep duration and stages | Anyone improving sleep habits |
| Sport modes | Records workouts such as walking, running, cycling and gym | Active users |
| Built-in GPS | Tracks route and distance without your phone | Runners, cyclists, hikers |

| Water resistance | Protection rated by IP code or ATM | Swimmers, outdoor use |
Features that affect battery life most
Always-on display, GPS, continuous heart-rate and SpO2 monitoring, and long calls use the most power. Turning off features you do not need can extend battery life significantly.
Frequently asked questions
What is Bluetooth calling on a smartwatch?
It lets the watch act as a speakerphone for your phone. Calls still go through your phone’s mobile connection, so the phone needs to be within Bluetooth range.
Can smartwatches track sleep?
Yes. Most use movement and heart-rate data to estimate sleep time and sleep stages. Results are estimates and best used to spot trends.
