How do you choose wireless headphones?
Choose wireless headphones by deciding on over-ear or on-ear fit, then comparing battery life, Bluetooth version, microphone quality for calls, noise cancelling, comfort and weight. Check that they fold for travel if you commute, and whether they can also be used with a cable.
Over-ear vs on-ear
Battery life and charging
Compare quoted playback hours, charging time and any quick-charge feature (for example, a few minutes of charging for a few hours of play). USB-C charging is now standard.
Bluetooth version and codecs
Bluetooth 5.x offers stable connections and good efficiency. Codecs affect how audio is sent: SBC is universal, AAC works well with iPhone, and aptX or LDAC are supported by many Android phones. Your phone and headphones must both support a codec to use it.
Microphone and calls
If you take calls or join meetings, look for a built-in microphone, ideally with noise reduction.
Noise cancelling
Active noise cancelling (ANC) uses microphones to reduce steady background noise such as engines. Passive isolation comes from the fit and padding.
Frequently asked questions
Are wireless headphones good for calls?
Yes, if they have a built-in microphone. Models with multiple microphones and noise reduction generally sound clearer to the person you are talking to.
Can I use wireless headphones with a cable?
Many wireless headphones include a 3.5 mm input for wired use. Check the product specifications.
