How do you choose a smartwatch?

Choose a smartwatch by first checking it works with your phone, then matching features to how you will use it: notifications, Bluetooth calling, fitness and health tracking, battery life, water resistance and comfort. Price differences usually come down to sensors, display quality, build materials and battery.

1. Check phone compatibility first

A smartwatch depends on a companion app on your phone. Apple Watch only works with iPhone. Many Wear OS watches now only pair with Android. Many other smartwatches use their own apps that run on both Android and iPhone. Check the compatibility row in the specification table before anything else. See our smartwatch compatibility guide.

2. Decide which features you will actually use

If you mainly want…Look for
Notifications without reaching for your phoneCall, message and app alerts; vibration strength; readable display
Calls from your wristBluetooth calling with built-in microphone and speaker
Fitness trackingStep counter, heart-rate sensor, sport modes, sleep tracking
Outdoor running or cyclingBuilt-in GPS, higher water resistance, long battery life
Swimming5ATM or higher water resistance and a swim mode

3. Compare battery life realistically

Quoted battery life is measured under typical use. Always-on displays, GPS, frequent calls and high brightness shorten it. Watches with richer displays and apps often need charging every one to two days, while simpler watches can last a week or more. Read the smartwatch battery life guide.

4. Display size and type

Larger screens are easier to read and type on but make the watch heavier. AMOLED screens show deeper blacks and brighter colours; LCD screens are common on budget models. Check the screen size (usually given in inches) against your wrist size.

5. Water resistance ratings

IP67 and IP68 ratings mean dust-tight and protected against immersion to the depth and time the manufacturer specifies. 5ATM means suitable for swimming in shallow water. Few watches are designed for hot showers, saunas or diving, so check the product page.

6. Comfort, straps and charging

Check strap width and whether straps are replaceable. Look at the charger type too: most smartwatches use a magnetic or clip-on charger, so a spare can be useful for travel.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a smartphone to use a smartwatch?

For setup and most features, yes. Many watches can still show time, count steps and record workouts when the phone is out of range, then sync later.

Can a smartwatch make calls without my phone?

Bluetooth calling watches make calls through your phone, so the phone must be nearby. Only LTE or eSIM models can make calls independently, and they need a compatible mobile plan.

Are smartwatch health readings accurate?

They are useful for tracking trends in activity, heart rate and sleep, but consumer smartwatches are not medical devices. Speak to a healthcare professional about any health concern.
