Will a smartwatch work with my phone?
A smartwatch works with your phone if its companion app supports your phone’s operating system and version. Apple Watch requires an iPhone. Most Wear OS watches pair with Android only. Many other smartwatches use apps available for both Android and iPhone, but some features can be limited on iPhone.
| Watch type | Android | iPhone |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Watch | No | Yes |
| Wear OS (for example Pixel Watch, recent Galaxy Watch) | Yes | No for current models |
| Watches using their own companion app | Usually yes | Usually yes, some features limited |
What to check on the product page
- Supported Android and iOS versions
- Name of the companion app
- Whether replying to messages works on iPhone (it often does not on third-party watches)
- Bluetooth version
Why some features are limited on iPhone
iOS restricts what third-party watches can do, so actions such as replying to messages or controlling some apps may only work with Android. Notifications, fitness tracking and calling usually work on both.
