How to choose a phone charger

  • Connector: most recent Android phones and iPhone 15 or later use USB-C. Older iPhones use Lightning.
  • Wattage: the phone only draws the power it supports, so a higher-wattage USB-C PD charger is safe to use and can charge compatible devices faster.
  • Fast-charging standard: USB Power Delivery (PD) is the most widely supported; some phones also support their own fast-charging systems.
  • Cable rating: use a cable rated for the power you need, especially for laptops.

What type of charger does my phone need?

Check the charging port. Most current phones use USB-C, and a USB-C charger that supports USB Power Delivery (PD) will charge most of them quickly. Older iPhones use a Lightning cable with a USB-C or USB-A plug.

Is it safe to use a higher-wattage charger?

Yes, with a good-quality charger. Phones negotiate the power they need, so a 65 W USB-C PD charger will only supply what a phone can accept.

Why is my phone charging slowly?

Common causes are a low-wattage plug, a cable that does not support fast charging, a dirty charging port, or using the phone heavily while it charges.
