What is USB-C charging?

USB-C is a reversible connector used by most modern phones, earbuds, tablets and many laptops. With USB Power Delivery (PD), a USB-C charger and device agree the right voltage and current automatically, allowing fast and safe charging from a few watts for earbuds up to 100 W or more for laptops with suitable cables.

Choosing a USB-C cable

  • 60 W cables suit phones, tablets and most small laptops.
  • 100 W or 240 W (e-marked) cables are needed for higher-power laptops.
  • Data speed varies: many charging cables only support USB 2.0 data speeds, which is fine for charging.

USB-C vs USB-A

USB-A is the older rectangular plug. USB-A to USB-C cables work, but USB-C to USB-C with a PD charger is needed for the fastest charging on most phones.

One charger for more devices

Because USB-C is now standard across so many devices, one good multi-port USB-C PD charger can often replace several older chargers.

Are all USB-C cables the same?

No. They differ in power rating, data speed and length. Check the wattage rating before buying a cable for a laptop.

Can I charge an iPhone with USB-C?

iPhone 15 and later have a USB-C port. Earlier iPhones can fast charge using a USB-C to Lightning cable with a USB-C PD charger.
